 James A. Oliver

On Monday, March 27, 2017, James A. Oliver of Nags Head Acres passed away peacefully at Spring Arbor Residential Assisted Living.  He will be dearly missed by his many friends.  Born Feb. 12, 1925 in Washington, DC, he made himself into an honorable man, and was a devoted husband and son.  Jim joined the US Navy in 1942 and was honorably discharged in 1957.  During that time he met and married the love of his life, Beverly June Volkmann, on Dec. 23,1955.  Following his discharge from the Navy he continued his education, receiving a BS in 1962 and an MS in Geography in 1965.  A well respected professor, he taught at LSU for 4 years and then at the University of Wisconsin - West Bend until retirement.

After his retirement, Jim continued to improve himself by earning his private pilot's license, becoming certificated in Touch for Health, took boating safety classes from the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and was a voracious reader.  He and Beverly were both active in Feline Hope and Friends of the Library.  They also spent a lot of time walking the beautiful beaches of the Outer Banks, picking up trash as they walked.  Jim was known and loved for entertaining his friends and neighbors with stories of his life, riding his bike through the neighborhood giving bones to all of the dogs, and feeding stray cats.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, his loving wife, Beverly.

The Olivers generously made provisions for the ongoing care of cats through Feline Hope and for advancing education through Dare County Libraries.

As per his wishes, Jim's and Beverly's ashes will be scattered in a private ceremony.  A beach clean up to honor their contributions to our community is scheduled for Saturday, May 6, 2017.  Anyone interested in participating should meet at the Barnes St. beach access at 10:00 am.  Trash bags will be provided.

If desired, donations can be made in the Olivers name to Dare County Libraries.

Condolences to the family may be expressed via the online register www.gallopfuneralservices.com.  Gallop Funeral Services, Inc. was entrusted with arrangements.
